SPOILER ALERT!
My favourite anime!
This anime tells the story of a 15 year old girl, that is an athlete in high school, and has the ability to read tarot cards. One day she dreams about giant robots fighting, and later, being saved by a boy with white wings.
That night, she is trying to beat her 13 second record running and a blue pillar of light strikes the floor, and a young boy appears along with a dragon that he has to kill.
Later she saves him for being attacked, and when she expects for a "thank you", she realizes that he thinks he is too good for that, she slaps him, and a blue pillar of light transports them to the planet of Gaea, where you can see the Moon and the Earth hanging in the sky: the Mystic Moon.
There she will find that the mysterious boy is Van Fanel, a 15 year old prince, about to become king of a small contry: Fanelia. When the ceremony is about to end, mysterious guymelefs with a stealth protection will burn the country, and the king unites with Escaflowne, the guymelef of an old civilization: Atlantis, made by the Ispano people. They will be bound with a blood pact, so anything that happens to Escaflowne will happen to Van, so, it the Guymelef is destroyed, Van will die. It doesn't happen. Almost.
The story goes around that, Hitomi and Van will be followed by Merle, an annoying 13 year old cat girl, they will meet a knight, Allen (25), a princess that wants to be a doctor, Millerna (17), that is engaged to Dryden (21). These are the main characters.
They will go till the end of the world to find the truth about themselves, their families, and the reasons they are all connected. The fact that Hitomi has a pendant that was given by her grandmother, that had been on Gaea, and met Allen's father. The fact that Van's dad, Fanelia's king had fallen in love with a draconian woman, that eventually they would get married and have 2 kids, and draconians are the people from Atlantis, that Allen's father was investigate. The fact that Van's brother, Folken, had turned to the evil side, helping the Zaibach empire to change the fate of people, and they need Hitomi's power to see the future.
I love this anime, not only because of the love story that develops around Hitomi and Van, they are too stubborn to admit they are in love, they only realize that on the last episodes, but they to recognize the need to protect each other. And it makes me so nervous while watching the anime is that Hitomi doesn't really know if she loves Allen or Van, and hurts Van to much, when she is kissed by Allen, until they realize it was a trap.
I do think that this anime has a brilliant design. Most people give up watching the anime because of the noses, well, I think that they remind me of the old anime design, not the new, that I don't like.
Some people also think that the English dub is poor, but I do prefer it to the original Japanese. And I have watched this anime also in Spanish.
I also have to say that this anime reminds me of Star Wars. I mean it. When Folken tells Van "I am your brother" it reminds me of what Darth Vader says to Luke! And then again, the good ones reunite to fight against the empire and their evil intentions, and they end up winning the war that destroys half of Gaea.
My God, so much story! Talking about the characters, Van Fanel, of course it's my favourite. He is a loner, like me, and he is so strong, and fights for what he wants, and he feels the need to protect the ones he loves, and Jesus, his beautiful wings. After all he is a descendent from Atlantis and they had wings, and they were thought to be dangerous, and there he is, a strong, beautiful young boy that it's a king.
I don't like Hitomi, the only thing that she and I have in common is that we both started to believe that fate was something that was already traced and would happen, but has the story follows, she realizes that her fear of her visions made her ask to the tarot cards and her pendant to make a better future, that would never happen, so in the end, she talks to the deseased Emperor of Zaibach, that she doesn's believe in predeterminated fate anymore, because she finally realizes that her fear and sadness had made the future change and not for the better, and that maybe if she didn't made it change, maybe things could have been better.
I don't like Millerna or Allen, I think that they think they are too good, but, truth be told, the story needs them to make sense. Allen's sister, Celena, that he says, would have been the same age as Hitomi, it's in fact a soldier in the Zaibach Empire and has been kidnapped, brainwashed and mind controlled and she is a boy named Dilandau (?)
At first I didn't like Merle either, but as older I got, and the more I watch this anime, over and over again, I started to like her and even identify myself in her.
Dryden has something that I can't explain, maybe his intelligence or maybe just the way he acts, he makes me love him so much to the point I can barely breathe,
This anime is short, it was supposed to have 37 episodes I think, but the budget was cut, and it was realeased with the 26 episodes we all know. And no, I don't like the movie. The only think that doesn't change it's the characters names. Please, the movie was terrible! But the anime series it's brilliant.
At the end of the story, the Empire of Zaibach is destroyed, Gaea is at peace again, and Van and Hitomi are finally alone, in Fanelia, under construction, and they finally admit what they feels towards each other. Hitomi makes her decision and she doesn't want to stay on Gaea, because, truth be told, she had a life, home, parents and friends waiting for her. I think that it's the only anime I've watched that has a realistic end. If it were me, I wouldn't have stayed, just like Hitomi realizes, if the future is not predeterminated, I don't know what might happen if I stay, I wouldn't know if the future would bring me happiness or more death. I am sure they would fight to make it work, but fate it's not a thing only 2 people can make, it depends of the entire humanity, and humans are greedy, and they want more power, and they would never stop making wars, there's always a thing that will always make someone want to fight for, it's what happens here, so why wouldn't it happen there? And to be even more realistic, he was a king, just like in Europe a few centuries ago, kings (queens, princes, and princesses) could never me wedded with someone that wasn't royalty. So I do think that Hitomi made the correct decision.
I watch this anime twice a year since 2006, I was 9 years old at the time, and it still amazes me, and I still think the same as I did back then. This entire review it's still what I thought when I was 9, of course, much updated, and more informed, because I'm a conspiracy minded so the idea of the Empire brainwashing and mind controlling people it's like music to my ears.
Of course I cry when I think that they will thousands of miles away from each other and the only way I can relieve myself is by reading FanFiction or Doujinshi. It has to be.
Another anime with a amazing soundtrack, you know, when they are saying goodbye for the last time, and that epic song comes along? Yeah, I cry like a baby.
Have you watched or intent to watch Vision of Escaflowne? If you did, or if you do intent of watching, what do you think?
