SPOILER ALERT!
This is like my second favourite anime.
This manga/anime, tells the story of a 15 year old girl, that is feeling the pressure of entrance exams to high school. One day, she falls into a well that is hidden in their family shrine and goes to the Feudal Japan, like 500 years ago. There, she will meet a half-demon named Inuyasha, that is sealed to a tree. He has been there for 50 years, because his first love, Kikyo, a priestess, had sealed him, because he "tried" to steal the Sacred Jewel. Well the story develops around that, and you will find some things that will change the story.
This anime (yes, I've only seen the anime), consists on the original 6 season run (167 episodes), and the "Final Act", just a season with 26 episodes. Also, there are 4 movies, that DO INTERFERE WITH THE STORY, contrary to what people think and I'll explain why, later. The manga consists on 56 books (1996-2008).
The anime was first broadcast in 2000, and ended up in 2004, 167 episodes later. The anime stop being produced because there were no more books that could continue the story. The author, Rumiko Takahashi, was still writing the remaining books that would end the story. When the last book was published, in 2008, Sunrise started the production of the last season, that premiered in 2009 and ended up in 2010.
While you watch the anime series, you will have to watch the movies, after episode 55, you will have to watch the movie "Affections Touching Across Time", after episode 95 you will have to watch the movie "The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass", after episode 136 you will have to watch the movie "Swords of an Honorable Ruler", and after episode 167 you will have to watch the last movie "Fire on the Mystic Island".
And now, I'll explain why you're gonna have to do this. If you watch the anime series without seeing the movies in between, you will see the main characters talking to new characters like they've known each other for years. And you'll think "Why are they talking so normally to someone they just met?". Well, the answer is in the movies. In the second movie the main characters meet Hojo, a boy that travels with them for a short time in the movie, and they will remain good friends. Later in the anime series, they will meet again, and they will talk normally, and they will be happy to see themselves again (episode 137). And this is just one example. So the movies do interfere in the anime series. I have searched if the movies were a continuation of the story, most people think they don't, but they do.
Talking about the main characters. I love Inuyasha, the fact that he tries to ignore his feelings about Kagome (his true love), and tries his best to keep his promise to Kikyo (his first love). You can see an evolution of Inuyasha's personality, he learns how to cope with his childhood, the loss of his mother and his first love, the way he learns how to trust others, and love others.
About Kagome. Well, I like her, she gives everything she has, and she suffers a lot when she watches Inuyasha and Kikyo together, but later she understands that she will always be more important to Inuyasha than Kikyo will ever be, but also understands that he will never forget her. She is a lot like me. Always stressed about school and helping others, and eventually, she gets what she wants.
There is also Sango and Miroku.
Well, I love Sango. She is so brave and so beautiful, and always tries to be happy though it's hard to keep that joy when all you can remember is bad times that changed your life forever.
I love Miroku too. OMG. He's a total pervert, he is always groping Sango's butt, and she slaps him everytime, and you can feel that jealous. But through the series you can see is good and brave side. I'm glad they end up together with kids, but, I hate the fact that Sango turns into a woman that stays the whole time at home doing domestic stuff.
On the series, theres is also Shippo and Kirara (though you have to read Kilala). They are always traveling with the gang to every corner of Japan in search of the Sacred Jewel shards, and for me, they represent the cuteness and the most funny parts in the anime.
Personally speaking, I hate Kikyo, you can't imagine the joy I felt when she finally died! She was so ignorant, and always trying to make everyone feel bad.
Well of course there is also the bad guys, that want everything to themselves, but ended up loosing everything. There are only one episode cases, but throughout the anime, there's Naraku, that's been in love with Kikyo. And you'll see that all of the characters had a honest wish for the Sacred Jewel, but turns out that the jewel would never grant your real wish.
There are two love triangles, one is too annoying (Inuyasha, Kagome, Kikyo), and one is too funny (Inuyasha, Kagome, Koga).
You will notice that the anime is too repetitive, they will be in a battle with Naraku, they will almost win, but then Naraku manages to run away, and will plan another trap for the main characters, and it will happen all over again. It will be like this till the last episode of the anime (The Final Act). But it's worth watching. You will laugh and cry through the anime.
Talking about the last episode, is kind of sad and at the same time is kind of rewarding. I loved it, I cried, it was so good. You will see through the last episode, Kagome wishes for the Jewel to desappear (that was the only correct wish), and she is cast away to her own time, and 3 years later, she graduates high school, and she goes to the well and she wishes so hard to be with Inuyasha again, that the well starts working, and during those 3 years Inuyasha was almost dying with loneliness, and he understands that the only reason he was able to meet Kagome was because she had to bring back the Jewel and had to make it disappear. When she goes through the well again, he smells her scent, and goes running towards her, and they end up together, married, and living in the Feudal Japan.
You will see in the anime two kisses between the main characters (Movie 2; Final Act ep. 26). But, they do not happen in the original story (manga). Really disappointing.
I don't think there's a anime with a better soundtrack than this. If you search for "Inuyasha's lullaby", you may feel chills just like I do. This anime is good in every single way.
I have watched the anime in Japanese and in English dub, and if you are really classy about anime, then, watch it in Japanese, but for the most time, if you want to really laugh, and feel the characters pain, watch it in English dub. That's my opinion ok?
There are also games from this anime, to play in you PS or in your PC. I haven't played, but I've seen the gameplay, and it's not something that I would play. But maybe you'll like it!
Well, this is it. This is just a great anime to watch, although it's a anime that doesn't show any consideration from Kagome relating to the fact that if she stays in Feudal Japan forever, she would never see her family again. Would you do that for love? And if you do watch the anime, or did, tell me what you think about it!
